Tools of the trade

It’s always interesting to see what software someone is using to get his job done.

Let’s start the list with the hardware I am using:

Workstation

I am using an iMac as my primary workstation. Attached to it is a led cinema display.

Laptop

The laptop I cary around is a 13″ macbook air. The first generation of these machines where horrid the second generation which I am using are greatly improved.

Mobile

The mobile devices I carry with me are an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2.

On all this hardware I am running the following software on a day to day basis:

Terminal emulator

Since unix is one of my main areas of expertise I spend a lot of time in a terminal, the terminal client of my choice is iTerm2. The terminal application that is shipped with OSX falls short in many areas. The primary reason I am using iTerm2 is the ability to adjust the color pallet and its ability to display 256 colors.

Administration

Evernote is my digital brain. I believe that nested folder structures are for masochists. For me being able to simply dump any information I want captured into a single container being able to tag it and using searches on metadata is a must.

A nice feature is that evernote also has an OCR feature which even make text on images searchable that together with the automatic syncing of my data to all my devices simply make this the perfect candidate to dump my stuff into.

I live (or try to live) a paperless life. All snail mail is scanned and stored into Evernote.

Password management

I am using strong distinct passwords for all the accounts that I own making a password management tool a must. 1Password runs on all my devices and stays in sync via dropbox. It also integrates will all major web browsers that I am using making this the tool for me to securely store all my passwords.
